BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION.
The ordinary meeting of the Benevolent Institution Trustees was held this afternoon; present Messrs Solomon (in the chair), Gourloy, Green, Miller, Rennie, and Can-oil.
The Chairman mentioned the matter of Mrs Agfr ew ’ 8 application for relief, _He said that at tjio lust meeting it was decided to grant her an allowance of 5s a-week for a term at the discretion of the secretary. Since then it had been represented to him that Mrs Agnew H’fi-s » strong, robust woman, under forty years of age, and well able to earn her living ; and that there was no need for her to apply for charitable aid at all. He would liko to know the opinion of the Trustees on the matter.—Mr Miller said that he opposed the granting of relief when it was first asked for, and he was of the same opinion still.— Mr Gourley said that he could not help taking fhe same view, but he would not stop Mrs Agnpw’s allowance for a week or two. —lt was resolved to continue the allowance for two weeks.
The matter of the man Briggs, concerning whom correspondence with the Christchurch Charitable Aid Board had taken place, came up, and it was rssolved that the Trustees consider themselves liable for his maintenance and will pay for it. The case of the Barry children, which had been before the Police Court, was dealt with.—The Chairman said that the Resident Magistrate and himself were of the same opinion, that nothing could be done but send Jbfrp children to the Nelson ■ Orphanage. $ way resolved that the matter should be left to the ,<jl.ecjto}on of the Magistrate. The letter of Mr Wardrop, Mayor off South Dunedin, suggesting that communications from contributing bodies should be considered private, was considered, and it was resolved that all communications from public bodies affecting relief matters be treated _ap private and confidential.
