(Received August 24, 1887, at 1.80 a.m.) A nugget weighing Cl7oz has been found at the Midas mine, Maryborough. AN EMINENT COLONIST. MELBOURNE, August 23. The statue of the late Sir Redmond Barry, erected in front of the Public Library, was unveiled to-day by the Governor. THE VICTORIAN TARIFF. MELBOURNE, August 23. In the Legislative Assembly to-night the tariff proposals of the Government were amended, and, on the motion of the Treasurer, the duty on sugar the produce of cane vas reduced from 3s 6d to 3a per cwt, and on sugar refined in Victoria from 2s fid to 2s. T^ e Dill embodying the changes was introduced in the House and assented to.
THE EXHIBITION. MELBOURNE, August 23. The Exhibition Bill passed through Committee in the Legislative Assembly to-day. MINERS’ STRIKE. SYDNEY, August 24. (Received August 24,1887, at 11.40 a.m.) A strike of miners employed in the Burwood Colliery has taken place. Two hundred men are on strike. SPORTING. SYDNEY, August 24. Thirty-two acceptances have been notified for the Hawkesbiiry Grand Handicap, Including Spade Guinea.
