MEETINGS OF CREDITORS.
. •— — I An adjourned meeting of the creditors of j D. Ross, watchmaker, was held at the j Assignee's office this morning. Mr Stamper appeared for the bankrupt; Mr Wilkinson represented a creditor. The Bankrupt in his examination said that up to October last he had been employed with G. and T. Young, and for the last five years he had received L 4 a-week. He was discharged in October last in consequence of intemperance, and since then he had been workingon his own account. His average earnings lately were L2 5s a-week, and he paid 8s a-week for rent. At Roslyn he lived in his wife's house, but paid interest on the mortgage. The property was bought by him some time ago, and conveyed to his wife three years since. The mortgage amounted to L 220, and the overdue interest to L 25. The property cost L3OO altogether. With the mortgage money he paid off all his debts within a few pounds, and there was a prior mortgage of Ll6O which he paid off. The furniture in the house belonged to his wife by gift from him in October, 1885. His wife had been ill for some time, but he had not been put to much expense for medical attendance. His earnings prior to October went in keeping the house and paying off loans. He spent on an average 10s a-week in drink.
The Assignee said that there was no doubt that the debtor's evidence disclosed sufficient to cause the suspension of his discharge. If he was brought up for public examination, however, there would not be enough to satisfy the very stringent requirements of the summary clauses of the Act, Mr Wilkinson said that it was not improbable that he would take private proceedings against the bankrupt for fraud. The meeting adjourned sine die. RE H. M. CLARKE. A meeting of the creditors of Hugh Mitchell Clarke, of Maryhill, shepherd, was held at noon. Mr Solomon was present to advise the Assignee; Mr Catomore appeared for the debtor ; and Mr Milne represented certain creditors. The bankrupt's statement showed his debts to be L 124 7s 9d, and his assets LI 2; deficiency Lll2 7s9d. The principal creditors are: A. F. Turner (grocer), L 37 18s ; J. Massey (hotelkeeper, Kyeburn), Li2; E. F. Lawrence (butcher), Lls lCs. The Bankrupt stated that he had been out of employment during the l&st five months. He had a wife and family of seven, two of whom were at work. By a fire he lost furniture and effects to the value of LSO. His wife bought the house they lived in. The Assignee said that the bankrupt seemed to have run into debt in a most unjustifiable manner, but he did not know that he could be punished for it in the present unsatisfactory condition of the Bankruptcy Act. Apparently small storekeepers about Dunedin were acting the part of a supplementary benevolent asylum by supporting people who were either unwilling or incapable of keeping themselves. The meeting adjourned until next Tuesday Ep A. lIONTGOMERY. A meeting of the creditors of Alexander Montgomery, of West Harbor, carter, was held this afternoon. Mr Solomon appeared to advise the Assignee, Mr Meatyard on behalf of the bankrupt, and Mr Stanford for a creditor. The bankrupt's statemept showed his debts to be LJOS 0s 4d", and his assets L2 ; deficiency, Llos os' 4d. Ronald Montgomery is a secured creditor for L2O Bs, holding a mortgage on furniture. The principal unsecured creditors are W. A. Mosley (L 57 9* Jod) and R. Montgomery (L 43 3s). The bankrupt having been examined, Mr Gollar proposed, and Mr Wareham seconded, that the bankrupt should be recommended for discharge. Mr Stanford objected op behalf of Mr Mosely, and the motion was lost as regards value in consequence. The meeting was adjourned sine die.
