MR HODGE AND DUNEDIN CENTRAL ELECTION.

TO TUB EDITOR. Sir -From the public utterances of Mr Hodge one would imagine that he had the interests cf Protection at heart, and is at any time praptwd to martyr Wmse'f for the sake of Protection. How does the following agree with the above profession? Mr Hodge, when discussing the Central eleotion the other day, openly declared that •'Fitchett would beat Cargill single-handed, but 11. 1 go to the poll Cargill will go in, and I.shall be second; and as long as I beat Fitchett that is all I ctre about To every vote Cargill will take from me he will take thyee from Fitchett." . This is a curious oommentary on the following passage from Mr Hodge's letter, published in yesterday s •Dally Times*:-"I have no hesitation in stating that it would in nowise bo to the advantage of the Protection party that I should retire.' After this the worth of Mr Holgo's loud-lunged declaration of self-saoriflcing loyalty to Protection oan be properly gauged.—l am, etc., DiPLICITY. Dunedin, August 13. TO TUBE EDITOR. Sir,—How are we to understand Mr Hodge ?He first declares that unless nominated by the Protection League ho will retire so as not to spoil tho Protection vote. He is evidently prepared to saorifico everything to his desire to get into the Houso.-I am, etc. jL Member of the Protection League. Dunedin, August 13.
