Mr Fergas was very favorably received. He blamed the Govefntfcent for intensifying the depresbion. Sir J. Vogel was a man of great ability, but he was too overreaching. Instead of the Colony progressing by "leaps and bounds "it had sunk to deeper depths, till now the burden of taxation was too grievous to be borne. Notwithstanding what had been done to open up the country by extending; the- railf, ways, otc, the gross revenue had t seriously decreased; indeed, the most searching and rigid economy was necessary in our present oircumstanccs. This would have to be effected by the .amalgamation of. departments, the abolition of useless offices and of suqh as were beyond the-Colony's means just how. He advocated the, reduction (temporarily) of the honorarium by UO'for ah<J LlOOfor' flvemb.ers' of 'the': Legislative Coupoil,' Hind economy in.the railway' management. He thought that U|Q,OQO altogether could thus pe saved. Yery few questions were asked, and a -vote of thanks and renewed confidence was proposed by Mr Robert Frjtchard, seconded, by Mr John Elliott,- »nd carried ftmlds * ? enera * applause. . - m^^mmmmmmmm mm
