Suicides in New South Wales.

One or two cases of suicide have occurred presenting unusual features. A young man, a Swiss, named Berti, made an abortive attempt in a railway carriage. While travelling from Melbourne he shot himself in the month with a small pocket pistol. After passing Benalla he was in a carriage with two ladies. They were lying down, and hearing a report found that he had shot himself. At Wangaratta the police took him to the hospital, where he coughed up a He had evidently placed the pistol in his mouth, and the bullet, which was very small, had struck the bone and glanced down his throat. He has now nearly recovered, and states that he was excited at the time, and did not know what he w;as doing. Another case is that of a servant girl at Woollongong. She was out on Saturday night, and returned home in depressed spirits. She told a fellow-servant

that her young man had given her up, and alio could not get over it. She took “rough on rats.” At the inquest Edwin Shaw, a Salvation Army young man, deposed that he had been keeping company with the deceased, He told her on Saturday night that he had heard something against her character, and that unless she cleared herself ho should have no more to do with her. Other evidence reflecting op this witness’s dealipgs with the girl was taken. The medical testimony was to the effect that death had resulted from arsenical poisoning. The Coroner commented on the base condflet of Shaw, and said he regretted that the law could not reach him.
