The Auckland «Star' has tho following: —" An article telegraphed from a Dunedin paper regarding the forthcoming interprovincial matches especially refers to Whiteside as a professional. The idea the article would give anyone would be that the Southerners were afraid to play against Whiteside, and were endeavoring to have him shunted. I am sure, however, that this is not the wish of the footballers, and that they desire to play our best team. Still, there is a direct charge made there that Whiteside is a professional, judged by their rules—viz., those adopted by the English Union last season and by the Southern Unions at the beginning of this. But our player has done nothing this season to warrant his being styled a professional. The Southern Unions cannot make the rule retrospective. If they can, more players than Whiteside would have to take a back seat. The rule, being adopted this season, can refer to this season only, and Whiteside has not, as I said before, as yet placed himself in a position that will allow of his being styled a professional. He is a paying member of his Club, and works for his living, If he this season received money promised last year for services then rendered it would not alter his position in the slightest degree. Therefore it would be well for our Southern friends not to commit themselves."

Oh, how refreshing, palatable, and reviving is a draught of cool water with American Hop Bitters in it, to a fever patient. See.
