ARTHUR STREET SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

Tho monthly mooting of the Committee was held at the school day evening; present—Messrs A. Sligo (chairman), G. Leslie (secretary). A. Burt (treasurer), 11. Crawford, P. M'Gregor, W. Dawson, and Captain Orkney. At the previous meeting of the Committee a deputation had been appointed to wait on certain parents who had been reported as not sending their children to school. The result of the visits made was that some children had been sent and tho attendance of others promised It was resolvod that tho Committoo endeavor to aid the head-master to obtain regular attendance of pupils by waiting on tho parents of absent cbildron and ascertaining tho causo of absence.—Tho boadmaster reported tho state of the school lor tho four Wijcks ending July 29 as follows : total on roll, 719 J average attendance, 607.-Tho report of the examination of the sohool, held on tho 18th to 22nd July, by Inspectors Petric and Taylor, was presented, showing: that in Standards 1., 111, and VI. tho maximum of passes was obtained, and in tho other standards tho avcrago was 88 per cent. The Cominittco resolved that the head-master and his assistants bo congratulated on the results of the lato inspection,—A circular was rcooivod from the Education Office stating that it had como to the notice of the Education Board that it Is customary for some aobool committees to expend a portion of the "sohool fund" in stationery, prizes, attendance certificates, eto It waß resolved that the seoretary of tho Board be informed that this Committee have Dever used any portion of the "tohoolfurd" for any other than legitimate purposes. .-Several members of Committee reported having been waited on by indignant parents regarding what they characterised as the large and unnecessary expense entailed by the numerous changes in the class books, and tho consequent hardship of finding that the looks which had been used by the elderchildren were useless for the younger when they entered the upper standards. Mention was also made of the con•stant complaints by parents finding that on any 'ohange of residence involving a ohange of sohool the books which had been in use in one sohool were frequently useless for another. The Committee recorded their opinion that ft was desirable that the (educational authorities should take some steps to remedy the evil complained of.—Messrs Leslie and 'Burt were appointed Visiting Committee for the ensuing month.
