THE LATE TARIFF.

HOW IT WORKED OUT. A table prepared by the ‘ Press ’ gives the duties collected in Christchurch during the short period—from May 11 to June 1— that the Stout-Vogel tariff was in operation, and contrasts the amounts that would have been received under the old tariff. “It will be seen,” remarks our contemporary, “that the 1887 tariff was even a much more serious impost than would appear, because importers cleared only sufficient to meet useful requirements.’' We supplement the information with a table showing under their several headings the sums collected at Dunedin under the rejected tariff, and mercantile men will have no difficulty on referring to the Christchurch table in ascertaining the value of the goods cleared here during the same
