FOOTBALL.

MONTECILLO V. UNION. The return match between the above clubs came off on the Caledonian Ground this afternoon. Both had an unbeaten record for the season, and, as the game was for the supremacy, a large crowd assembled to witness the struggle. The weather was fine, and, had the ground not bee a quite so soft, circumstances could not have been more favorable. The t’ ams were as published, save that Bannatyne (Moutecillo) played full-back in place of Gordon. Messrs H. Rose and W. Wyinks umpired, with Mr T. L. Austin as referee. A novelty was introduced by the “Montes” in the publication of a “k’rect card,” giving the names and positions of the players, and this proved of groat help to the spectators. After ten minutes’ give-and-take play, the ball was rushed up to the southern end, and Bannatyne was carried over the line, a forcedown resulting. This put the Mooteoillo on their mettle, and some pretty dribbling followed. Had Skitch been able to pick up the ball he must have got in, but he was unable to do so, and the Union (maroons) were forced down. Within a very short time Noel headed a rush, and carried'the ovai to within eighteen inches of the corner-flag. Here a scrummage was formed, and Beck (who with Isaacs was playing in fine form) got over amid great cheering from the Monteoillo sympathisers. Watson was entrusted with the kick, which proved a poster. In the latter part of the spell the Monteoillo twenty-five was repeatedly invaded, and just before the spell ended Bee had a dash at goal, but the ball rose a couple of yards to the right of tho goal-bar. The score at the end of the spell was: Montecillo, one point; Union, nil. No score was made in the second spell. Shepard repeatedly relieved his side (Montecillo).
