INQUEST.
An inquest was held at the Resident Magistrate's Court, Port Chalmers, yesterday afternoon, before Coroner Carew, into the circumstances of the death of Constable Porter.
Sergeant P. Finncgan deposed that Constable Porter went on duty at 8 p.m. of the 20th inst. Witness last saw him at halfpast twelve o'clock on the next day in Mount street. Ho conversed with him for about a quarter of an hour, and had never seen him since. Constable Porter came off duty properly at 4.45 a.m. of June 21. His duty took him down the wharf, and he was supposed to examine all the doors of the business places and the entrances to the hulk Don Juan. Witness considered it was Constable Porter's duty to examine all doors and entrances leading to the hulk Don Juan. A fire had previously taken place on board her, and precautious were therefore observed. The jury returned the following verdict: —" That Henry Porter accidentally lost his life in the execution of his duty, and the cause of deceased's death was attributable to want of suitable netting being placed along the wharves."
