MUNICIPAL.

Cavkrsham.—This Council met on Thursday evening, when there were present—The Mayor (Mr W. Bragg), Crs Methven, Nutting, Taverner, Rutherford, Burman, M'Kelvey, Cole, Bridtmian, Wilson,.and helped to warm our imaginations and to Calder. The Council referred to the Mayor, with power to act, the case of parties receiving charitable aid in the Borough. Adopted. It was also resolved that, fenders be called for leasing the reserve for grazing purposes for twelve months.—The Drainage and Water Committee reported recommending that the cost of cleaning the mud tanks in the main drain be charged to the dtetrict fund. They recommend that no action be taken in the matter of the petition from the ratepayers in Kensington and Middle Wards. They resolved to adhere to the resolution of 11th May last re Mr White's water supply. They recommended the Council to offer the South Dunedtn Fire Brigade JL2 2s to attend each fire which may happen in the Borough until further notice, and instructed the inspector to report to next meeting of Committee what fire brigade plant is available for use. Adopted.— The Works and Baths Committee reported recommending the Council to authorise the inspector to procure what metal is required for repairing streets and roads. They reoom-

mend the Counoil to reply to the St. Kilda Council that they are willing to contribute the half cost of 40yds of metal for the Bay View road, provided they will contribute their share of 30yds of metal for the Forbury road. Adopted. Mr William Wilson wrote asking the Council to remit six months' rates on his property at the corner of Marion and Smith streets, the house having been destroyed by firo, and the property vacant for Bix months. Mr Wilson to bs informed that the Council have no power to grant his request.—Mrs Pogson and five other storekeepers, etc., at St. Clair wrote complaining about the unfair competition they are subjected to by there being no by-law to prevent hawkers vending goods without a license. Remitted to the By-laws Committee.—The town clerk of South Dunedin wrote stating his Mayor would sign the cheque for LIOO so soon as this Counoil fulfil the agreement entered into by the two Councils: that his Council will not accept the half cost of damage done to the embankment, and proceedings will be taken at once in order to recover the full amount. It was resolved that this Council adhere to their former resolution.— The town clerk, Dunedin, wrote asking the Council to take increased measures to ensure an obedience of dairymen to the regulations regarding the inspection and cleanliness of dairies, as fever was very prevalent in the city. Referred to the Mayor with power to act.— Cr M'Kelvev moved appointed to have charge of the roads in Caversham Borough, and to carry out the following duties, viz. :—To impound cattle found wandering in the Borough, to summon the owners thereof, to summon persons riding or driving over any footpath or injuring the Bame, to summon any person turning loose or allowing to wander any cattle upon any unfonced land in the Borough, to summon any person furiously or negligently riding or driving in the Borough.'—Seconded by Cr Rutherford and carried. —Cr Burman moved that Mr Hargreaves be appointed inspector of nuisances within the Borough, and that the Mayor certify to such appointment. Agreed to.—Cr Taverner moved that the inspector report on the condition of Sydney street, and the cost of putting it in a thorough state of repair. Agreed to.— Cr Wilson said that numbers of people were in the habit of cutting down the native trees and timber on the reserve at St. Clair park, and removing the same, thereby destroying the beauty of the reserve. Mr Allan (nurseryman) had offered, if he had authority given by the Council, to take charge of the reserve and protect it from being destroyed. It was resolved to appoint Mr Allan an honorary ranger for that purpose.
