PROTECTION.

TO TBS EDITOR. Sir, —For the information of your correspondent “A Consumer,” permit me to state that the proprietors of the * Evening Herald ’ have already given a guarantee of their sincerity in advocating Protection by printing their journal on paper manufactured by Messrs Fergusson and Mitchell, at the Water of Leith Muls. I may also mention that the quality of the material was excellent, and I have no deubt that-, with a little judicious encouragement, the enterprising manufacturers in question would be able to supply paper at as low a p. ice as that charged by Home makers. The same remark will apply to the proprietors of the Mataura Mills. Your correspondent may rest satisfied that I shall be found advocating the levying of duties on all articles that can be profitably manufactured in the Colony.—l an), etc., Thomas Bracken. Dunedin, April 16.
