ALLEGED POLLUTION OF THE LEITH.

Sir, Davidson says that I misstated facts with regard to the low level water supply. The truth of the matter I leave the public to judge after perusing what I have written. On Thursday, 31st March, Mr Mirams and myself went up the Leith to make arrangements for taking in the water and getting Mr Davidson to keep bis sawdust out of the supply. We were prepared to have paid him any reasonable expense he might have been put to, bnt when he demanded LIS and then LlO per week we declined to have any further dealings with him. At that time he was busily engaged wheeling the dirty heap of sawdust, lying outside the mill, and tipping it over' the bank into the Leith. fle had got about a load of it wheeled, when we remonstrated with him for doing so. Next day (Friday) the Committee were up, and there was still about the same quantity; but on Sunday forenoon the whole of it had been pat in, and apparently very recently done. Mr Davidson now says it was all, there on Thursday. He also Bays that the water supply does not come from the Leith, but from the tail-race. On Sunday and the t#o other days that we were up there was a large portion of the water coming down the Leith into the box where the snpply is taken from, as Mr Mirams and four councillors can testify. ' Mr Davidson received LSO last year from the Corporation, which 1 think they could legally recover, as I hold he has no right to E dilute a stream which runs through the jity, and which to all intents and purposes belongs to the oitxzens. I have further to state that on Sunday last sawdust was again put-in, as I .have two witnesses who saw the parties doing it. But this will come out at the proper time. —Tam, etc., 1 ' ' WiixiAM Dawson. Dunedin, April 15. ' -v. •■•-
