PORT CHALMERS ELECTION.

The nomination of a person to represent tho electoral district of Port Chalmera took place at noon to-day, in front of the Court-house. There was a numerous attendance, Returning-officer Downes read the following nomination: — JAM'S Mills, proposed by David Law, seconded by William Murray. As no other person was nominated the returning officer declared Mr James Mills elected as a member of tho House of Representatives for the district of Port Chalmers.— (Cheers.) Mr Mills thanked the elecors for the honor they had conferred on him in electing him unopposed. That was the proudest moment of his life—lie could wifely say so—in being elected to represent such an important district, and to succeed such an eminent man as their late member Mr James Macmilrew. He thanked them for the confidence, and, although ho could say very little at the present time, he trusted that the next timo lie had the pleasure of meeting them he should be able to explain all that he had done on their behalf and still retain their confidence. He thanked the Committee, who had done a great deal to influence tho minds of the electors in his favor. The proceedings closed with the customary vote of thanks to the returning officer.
