The following report has been received from the Suboolleotor of Customs at Cooktown, under date

Moron 26:—" I have the honor to report that the folio viug came to my knowledge alter the depar lire or Saturday's steamer, and I now Bend it for wluc it may be worth, bearing in mind that auriferous quartz has arrived hero from Finschaven for transhipment, and that it is reported that the German authorities intend very shortly to throw open their Colony to the puulio. About a week ago 0. Ohristson, who has a bfiche-de-mer station at the Hope Islands, told Mr Davis, dipping agent here, that a few days previously he aiio^ a man named Hoe, formerly master and part owner cf the Wild Duok, had put off to a large ketch arriving from the north. He would net give her name, and either cauid not or would not Bay where she was from, but he stated that the master showed them the hold full of pearl-sbe.l estimated by him at about 80 tons; also a box containing a quantity or gold, comprising several nuggets. The waster si d that he was bound for Sydney, and that he would have to call at Port Douglas or Ciirns for stores. H was also understood that the ketch had been out from Sydney about nine months. Christson forthf* stated that the master took Roe as pilot down the coast, promising him LSO on arrival in Sydney. As the vessel in question came fiom the northward, it seems not improbable that both the gold and the shell came from some part of New Guinea. There is a strong belief here that gold exists in both Britkni and German New Guinea, and an expedition is uow being fitted out by Messrs Armit, Inglis, and others, to explore the country in the British Proteotorate. Extended claims are being taken up between Beddonton and the Teremakau River. A quantity of quartz sent Home by the direotors of the Union mine at the Waihi was sold in London at LSO per ton to a German firm, who are treating the ore by improved processes. THE LONDON MARKETS.
