REGISTRY OFFICE EXTORITON.

[Special to the Star.]

AUCKLAND, March 30.

The following shameless instance of registry office extortion is recorded by the ‘Star’: —“A man whose penniless condition was so extreme that he was bordering on a state of starvation applied at the local registry office for a situation as cook. The keeper of the place refused to give the address unless he signed a paper promising to pay 30s if he got the situation. He was helpless; signed the paper, and subsequently got the situation, and now his first earnings must go to liquidate the heavy charge made by the keeper of the registry office instead of to his family, who arc so much in need of the money. The case is only one of a number that have occurred lately.”
