NEW ZEALAND ALLIANCE.

AUCKLAND, March 29,

At the meeting of the New Zealand Alliance to-day, Mr Monk, M.H.R. for Waitemata, was on the platform. Apologies for non-attendance were received from Sir R. Stout, Sir F. Whittaker, Mr T. Thompson, M.H.R., Mr Moat, M.H.R., Mr Peacock, M.H.R., Mr Hobbs, M.H.R., Archdeacon Dudley, Rev, Mr Ward, and Mr W, S. Allen, late M.P. for Newcastle, England. Mr Ewington referred somewhat sarcastically to the number of apologies received from members of the Assembly. He said that the time would come when they would not be afraid to appear at meetings of the Alliance ; when they would be compelled to give up the practice of running with the hare and hunting with the hounds. The firsfcannual gathering of the members of the New Zealand Alliance took place today, in. the Y.M.C.A. Rooms, Auckland, at eight o’clock. Nearly 200 persons sat down to breakfast, the tables being attended by the ladies of the Women’s Christian Temperance Association. Among those present were clergymen of almost every denomination in Auckland, together with , other leading citizens and representatives from other parts

of the Colony. Mr Upton moved, and Mr Seth Smith, R.M., seconded a vote of thanks to the ladies, expressing his great sympathy with their movement. The vote was unanimously adopted. Those present adjourned to the lecture hall, where Sir W. Pox took the chair, and letters of apology for non attendance were read by the secretary from several M.H.R.s and others, including Sir R. Stout. After Mr T. W. Glover had read the report, which was a lengthy document and occupied just half an hour in the reading, the chairman congratulated the members on the work done. Mr Lock (Nelson) then moved and Mr Winstone seconded the adoption of the report, which was carried unanimously. Eight other resolutions _ dealing with future work were also carried. A letter re the Dunedin auxiliary was received, but as it was felt impossible for the Conference to deal satisfactorily with it,_ it was referred to the Executive. The evening public meeting was held in the large lecture hall; Sir W. Fox in the chair. Amongst thh speakers were the Revs. E. H. Taylor (Thames) and J. Chew (Auckland), Messrs Monk, M.H.R., Buckland, M.H.R., F. Ewington, and others.
