NEW GARRISON HALL, PORT CHALMERS.

The Volunteers at Port Chalmers, having for some time felt the want of a suitable place for drill purposes, secured a piece of ground nearly in the centre of George street, on which has been erected a large and commodious drill-shed at a cost of L 550. The corps interested decided to celebrate the coinpletion of the building by holding a carnival, which was opened at four o’clock this afternoon by the Governor, in the presence of the Mayor, Borough councillors, and a largo gathering of Volunteers and townspeople. The new hall is built of wood, is 80ft in length by a breadth of 50ft, and 16ft high. It is lighted in the day by six skylights of plate - glass, and at night by three large sunlights, with appropriate burners in the corridor and- anterooms. There arc two large windows on either side of the main entrance door, which is Bft wide, and gives access by a flight of steps to a corridor leading to the main hall. This corridor is 10ft wide, and lofty. Entering the hall, there are three rooms—that on the right being 20ft by 12ft, and intended for officers and meetings. On the left-hand side are two rooms, each 10ft by 12ft, intended for the use of the secretaries of the different corps. The large hall is 67ft by 49ft. On each side are two large doors, intended to afford means of egress m case of emergency to a 10ft right-of-way. The basement portion of the building will be utilised for storage purposes. The contractors were Messrs Bauchop and Co.
