SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

Reuter informs us that the two days’ match between Shaw and Lillywhite’s team against Fifteen of the East of Melbourne Club ended in a draw largely in favor of the former. Scores: Englishmen, 274 (Lonmann 100, Scotton 71); East Melbourne, 130 and 208 for nine wickets.

At the Lancaster Park trotting meeting yesterday the Champion Trot, about three miles, resulted as follows:—Mr W. Horner’s Shakespeare (7550 c,), 1; Mr J. Walker’s Energy (40sec), 2; J. Farrar’s Billy (50sec), 3. Time, Bmins2seo, < L 1,617 was put through the totalisator during the day. Melville has been scratched for all engagements at the Waikouaiti races. Thunderbolt was was scratched for the Great Autumn Handicap at 11 a,m. on Saturday. The following clubs were drawn for tho ninth round of Cup matches :

North Dunedin a bye. The match Roslyn v. Grange was awarded to tho Roslyn Club, and the Warehousemen were awarded the match against the Carisbrook Second. Lochiel and Maxim were brought back by the Waihora to-day, Messrs Cutts and W. Clifford also returned by her. The bowling and batting of the Englishmen in their last match against Victoria were particularly fine. Horan and Morris resumed their places at the wickets on the third day, with the score at 137 for five wickets, but the latter was almost immediately caught, and tho Jolimonter after adding eight to his total was clean bowled by Lohmann. Worrall was bowled by Sherwin without scoring, and Cotter was caught after contributing a single. Phillips and Houston were together for a little time, but the bowling was much too good for them. Shrewsbury and Bates -went in to force the runs, and how well they succeeded in doing so off the bowling of Midwinter, Bruce, and Worrall, the score shows. Both batsmen punished the bowling severely, scoring at a terrific rate. Bates knocked off 86 out of 111 before he drove Worrall back to the bowler. Shrewsbury was not but with 23, and Barlow (not out) 4. In a match commenced in Melbourne on Thursday, between old players of the Melbourne and Richmond Clubs, there was some high scoring. The Richmond compiled 436, Strongman being not out with 117, Grace following with 83. Tho tour of tho English cricketers is now drawing to a close, the following being the remaining fixtures:—Sandhurst, 15th and 16th; All Australia, 17th, 18th, 19th, end 21st; South Australia, 24th, 25th, and 26th. They embark for England ’ on the latter date by the Massilia, The match against All Australia will be played on the Melbourne ground. The New South Wales contingent will probably comprise Moses, Jones, Garrett, Ferris, Turner, and M‘Donnell. It is not yet decided who will be the Victorian representatives, but it is doubtful whether any of the Adelaide players will be asked to join it. The Tasmanian papers urge that C. W. Rock should represent that island. A contest for the wrestling championship in mixed styles took place in Melbourne on March 5 between Donald Dinnie and T. Cannon, of tho United States, the stake being LIOO. The struggle throughout was a determined one. In the Graeco-Roman, catch as-catch-can, and side-hold styles, the American was successful, though in the latter Dinnie lost by a mistake. Ihe Scotchman proved tho better man in tho Scotch, Cornish, and Cumberland styles, and in the remaining one, the oollar-and-elbow, a most exciting struggle took place, ending, after an hour and a quarter, in a draw.
