ROWING.
The Otago Rowing Club competed for the Thomson Cup at Ravensbourne on Saturday afternoon. The heats were rowed off as follows : First H»at. Howlison Otroke), H S. Diok, Cook, Brent .. 1 CiaU(ntroke), M'Adani, VValoott, Ivens .. .. 2 Trc-edcr (stroke), Beal, Galloway, HuxtaMo .. 3 The strength of the wind and tide up the harbor prevented the boats from getting into line until the lapse of some time, and when Mr Provo, who acted as starter, eventually gave the signal, Matheson's crew wa|! left at the post. Howlison soon got ahead, and keeping the lead won by two lengths. Secokd Hbat. J. Branigan (stroke), Mill*, Moore, M Kechnle .. 1 C. Buttorivorth (stroke), Gibson, Lo Cxen, Rait .. 2 Ro«s (stroke), Hyams, Allen, Wright .. .. S C. Branigan also started, but his bow broke his oar. A good race ensued between Branigan and Butterworth. FIFAL HsAT. J. Branigan (stroke), Mills, Moore, M'Keehnle .. 1 Ho»llson (stroke), Diok, Cook, Brent .. ..2 Craig (stroko), M 'Adam, Walcott, Irens .. .. 3 Just after the start Butterworth and Craig collided, and thus lost all chance of the race. There was a fine finish between Braniean arid Howlison, the former only winning by half-a-length.
