DOWLING STREET WORKS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Seeing that your journal states that William Barnes resumed work yesterday morning, in starting the men in Dowling street, I wish to give it an emphatic denial. The facts arc these : When the jury had examined the blast the workmen inquired whether they could start again next morning. I asked the Coroner if he would give permission, and he answered yes, if I would be responsible that nothing would be touched about the blast until further inquiry had been made. I then ordered the men to come to work the following morning. I started the men myself, superintended them all day, and also this morning. I took it upon myself, on the night of the accident, to suspend the works until further inquiries. William Barnes has had nothing at all to do with the w:>rk since the accident.—l am, etc., John Barnes, Mayor. Dunedin, May 20.
