PUBLIC-HOUSE HOURS.

TO THE EDITOR.

Slß,—Mr Sligo i» reported in your issue of Monday to have stated at tlnmiieoting of the newly-elected Licensing Coirtniittcn that ho thought legislation should appoint the hour of closing of hotel haia. Am I not correct in stating that the present Licensing Act has fixed 10 p.m. as the hour for closing, but that an extension till 11 p-»i- may ho granted on it being shown to he to the “ benefit of the community,” and only then on payment of an extra fee ? If I am not correct in my statement 1 will feel obliged if some of your readers will correct me. If I am correct, docs it not show Mr Sligo to lie ignorant of the Act he is now trying to administer. He is certainly not correct in Baying that the “citizens” have decided that 11 p.m. shall bo the hour of closing. Only 1,000 out of a population of about 20,000 or 23,000 have so decided. Mr Sligo should not crow so much. The licensed victuallers had to raise LI,OOO to fight this last election (ride ‘Temperance Herald, March 1).—I am, etc., A Citizen, Not a Ratepayer. Dunedia, March 4.
