[Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, January 6. An unoccupied cottage of four rooms at Parnell was burnt down this morning. It belonged to John Ellison, and was insured for Ll5O in the New Zealand Office. Richard Dean, the Wairuka settler who fell from his horse the other day, died yesterday of concussion of the brain. NEW PLYMOUTH, January 6. A six-roomed house in York road, near Midhirst, owned by Mr Worms, was burnt down yesterday. The building was insured for L2OO, and the furniture for LIOO. WAIPAWA, January 6. At the inquest on the fire a verdict was returned that there was nothing to show how the fire had originated. The Town Board passed a special vote of thanks to the Napier Fire Brigade and to the district manager of railways. HAWERA, January 6. An unoccupied four-roomed house, owned by Mr Webby, and the adjacent cottage, owned by Mr Magon and occupied by Mr Squire, were burned down. The unoccupied house was insured for LBO in the Union Ofllcc. The other place was uninsured. GISBORNE, January 6. As a result of the inquiry by the Hospital Committee, the services of Binfield and wife (wardsman and matron) have been dispensed with. The evidence showed that there had been an unlimited consumption of drink, orgies, and disturbances among the wardsmen and patients. There had also been frequent visits by men to the female ward. BLENHEIM, January 6. George Patchett's shop at Picton was broken iutp last night, and L4G worth of jewellery stolen. Part of it was, however, recovered in an outhouse. Two mon named Murphy and O'Sullivan have been arrested on suspicion. CHRISTCHURCH, January 6. At three o'clock this morning a shop and dwelling-house owned and occupied by Henry Edge, and a cottage belonging to Mrs Stewart, near Lancaster Park, were destroyed. Edge's premises were insured in the New Zealand Office for LIBO, and the stock and furniture in the Equitable for L 250. Stewart's house was insured in the Colonial for L2OO. Tho firo began in Edge's kitchen.
INVERCARGILL, January 6. James Delaney and Jeremiah Ryan were drinking in the former's house at Georgetown last night, when a quarrel took place, during which Delaney stabbed Ryan in the neck with a knife. The wound is not dangerous, although it went within an eighth of an inch of the vein. Delaney was arrested and brought up to-day and remanded, bail being allowed. Complaints are made as to the continued dry weather affecting the crops.
