THE ATHENAÆUM.
TO THE EDITOB. Sib, —On hearing that no less than 600 volumes have, since January, been acldel to the Athenanun, and thatJa"furthor sum of LIGOon the purchase of books has been authorised, I cannot help expressing regret that yearly subscribers only should have the privilege of reading them. I have been for several years a quarterly subscriber, and all the benefit I have" derived thereby has been, once a-week —the Saturday—to get a hurried glance at the papers and periodicals in the reading-room. Referring to the number of my ticket, I notice there are more than 600 quarterly subscribers whose case, very likely, must be identical to mine; because it would inconvenience them to pay their subscriptions in full. If the Athenreum Committee are really anxious to make the institution popular, they should offer more facilities to subscribers.
We do not ask for the subscriptions to be lowered; we desire only that halfyearly subscribers should, at least be permitted to take books from the library.—l am, etc., A Quarterly Subscriber. Dunedin May 27.
