Maori Hill, —At this Council’s meeting last night a letter was received from the borough solicitors (Messrs Chapman and Strode) intimating that Mcssrs_ Stewart, Holmes, and Dennistou had again written for the amount of their judgment and costs in the ease of Anderson v. the Maori Hill llorough Council, and threatened that unless the amount were paid they would take further proceedings. The clerk was instructed to inform Messrs Stewart, Holmes, and Denniston that owing to the financial position of the Borough the Council were unable to pay the judgment at present.—Mr George Mite'hcson wrote that he had completed his contract for part of the formation of the Wakari-Waitaki road, and enclosed an account for L3O 19s. He also stated that stray cattle and sledges passing over the new formation had cut up the road. It was unreasonable that he should be asked to repair the road in the spring, as Cr Campbell had suggested. lie, however, had offered to do any work that might have been left undone if Cr Campbell would point it out and the sledging and cattle straying were stopped. Cr Cantrell, who had been appointed by the Council to supervise the work, stated that the contract had not been carried out according to the specifications ; at the same time he recommended that the contractor should be allowed a progress payment of L2O, and paid the balance of the account on the satisfactory completion of the contract. After some discussion, the matter of the contract was referred to the Works Committee to report, and it was resolved that the contractor be allowed a progress payment of L2O.—A petition simed by thirty-six ratepayers was presented to the Council asking that something might be done to prevent the Leith from overflowing its banks and damaging property, A deputation waited on the Council with regard to the matter, and agreed to try to obtain the signatures of East Ward ratepayers to a document consenting to a special rate of 6(1 in the £ being levied on all rateable property in East Ward.— Cr Church presented a petition signed by ratepayers residing in Newington, asking that the Newington road be repaired. The matter was referred to the South Ward members to report.—A committee appointed by the Council reported re Belvedere township that they had a conference with Mr Hogg, when the following terms were agreed to, subject to ratification : —That the Zigzag road be left out, and roads in the proposed township of the extension of Lcithton be continued so as to connect with Belvedere : that 10 per cunt, on the amount of sales of all land (except sections already sold to Mr Hitchcock) he paid to the Council for the purpose of forming and improving streets in the township ; that a tracing be supplied to the Council, having the grades of the streets marked thereon ; that all fences (wherever necessary) be removed and re-erected so as to be at least 66ft distant from the present bank of the Water of Leith ; and that the land between the road and the Leith, being marked second 58 in the plan, be conveyed to the Council, and a title given under the Land Transfer Act, all costs of bringing the land under the Act, etc., to be borne by Mr Hogg ; the sum of L 25 to bo paid to him on completion of certificate of title. The report was adopted. —A committee consisting of the Mayor and Cr Rossbothain, appointed to inquire re Davidson’s encroachment on the district road, township of Leithville, reported that they had interviewed Mr Arthur, Chief Surveyor, who stated that there was an illegal encroachment on the road-line by Mr James Davidson, and that notwithstanding the encroachments had been improperly put through the Lands Transfer Office, Mr Davidson’s fence would have to be removed back in order to give the width of road shown on the record map of the district. It was resolved: “ The landowners residing in the Leith Valley be notified to remove all obstructions from off road-lines in the Valley.—The Finance Committee reported that the overdraft at the bank was L 92 11s.
