THE CITY COUNCIL.

The following reports will be submitted at this evening’s sitting of the City Council: The Wator Supply Oommlttee report having accepted Messrs A. Moliiaon and Co.’s tender for carting pipes, plant, and other material for the ensuing twelve months. The Finance Oommlttee report having passed accounts for payment as follows : —Municipal account, L 825 2s 4d; water, L 164 9s 4d; gas, L 505 5s < total, L 1.494 16s Bd. The Gas Supply Committee report recommending : —That tenders be invited for the construction of a coal-tar still for the distillation of carbolic and other oils; cost about Ll6O. —That the price of ookebe reduced from. 27s 6d per ton to 25i per ton, with the usual discount, or Is 3d per bag; the reduction to take place as from the 16th Inst.—That the salary of the Gas Engineer be increased from LBSO to L4OO per annom, and that ho be paid a bonus of LSO for past services. The Reserves Committee recommend that Messrs M'Landress, Hepburn, and Co, be appointed to conduct the sales of Corporation leases during the year 1889.—That one of the following applicants be appointed to the position of foreman gardener at the Botanical Gardens: H Baverstook, C. Carter, A. Forsyth, J. Gobble, jun, J. M'Bean, and J. Powell.—Mr George Matthews having presented to the Committee a packet of forty varieties of Indian, South African, and British seeds for trial In the Botanical Gardens, the gift has been acknowledged, and the gardener has been Instructed to furnish Mr Matthews with a number of plants from the gardens. The Committee have also to thank Mr G, Fenwiok for a packet of seeds of Californian trees.

The Public Works Oommlttee recommend that the Ocnnotl agree to Messrs Matheson Bios', proposal to take 7,000 table yards of material from Csnongate street east at its junction with Rattray street for their reclamation contract near Stuart street, at a cost to the Corporation of 3d per onbio yard, or a total of about L9O —With reference to motion 996, the Oommlttee submit a plan of the City showing the position of all the public lamps, but they have no recommendation to make in regard to a redistribution of lamps, being of opinion that economy would be better achieved by reducing the prloe of gas. —A reply has been, sent to Mr . Boot to the effect that the Council will not interfere in respect of his doorstep encroaching on the footpath, Octagon, provided Mr Boot takes all responsibility In oa e of accidents; the step to remain during the pleasure of the Council.— The following tenders, have been accepted : Supplying special lines, Ironmongery, and stores, A. Briscoe and Oo,; supplying timber and nails, Dunedin Iron and Woodwaro ComSany; supplying oils, paints, glass, etc., tanedin Icon and Woodware Company; supplying Portland oementi Findlay and 00,, 16s 6d per cask; blacksmith’s work and materials, O.
