The Ladies’ Challenge Shield was fired for on Saturday afternoon, eight teams competing. The Clutha Rifles were again victorious.
The annual prize meeting was brought to a close at Musselburgh this morning. The weather was again fine overhead, but there was a dull light with a puffy wind blowing across the range. In. the La lies’ Chal'enge Shield match only eight teams competed, the B Battery and Dunedin Naval Artillery being the absentees. The failure of the latter to put a team into the field was in consequence of the officer commanding the corps neglecting to onter them, and judging by the form which several individual members of the Naval Artillery had shown during the meeting they would probably have given a good account of themselves but;for this omission. The Clntba Rifles went back from the 200-yards range with a decided advantage, which they increased at the longer distances, and. eventually won by 63 points. The whole of the team representatives fired consistently, and the fact that they have now won the Shield four times out of nine competitions shows how assiduously practice has been maintained by the company since the trophy was first subscribed for. The L Battery, the only carbine company entered, are fourth on the list. Subjoined are the scores :

The following made 70 points ; Volunteer Fairley, Wakari .. 26 22 20 —7O Sergeant Stewart, Olutha .. 27 24 19 —7O Volunteer Smith, Clutha ~ 30 23 17 —7O On Saturday evening there was a meeting of the Council to consider the various protests entered. That, against Captain Willmott, M Battery, for using improper sights, was allowed, and he was consequently disqualified from the list of aggregate prize-takers, in which he had secured second place. The protest against the City Guards for firing in the team match on Saturday morning was very properly summarily thrown out; and that against the Clutha Rifles in the same competition fell through. Lieutenant Hogg made an explanation which showed that his men had complied with regulation 8 in every particular, and consequently no further action was taken. The meeting has on the whole been a satisfactory one, but there is a prevailing disposition (especially among country members) that a permanent range should be got a short distance out of town—say at Mosgiel, The expense to competitors would not be increased, and the matter should engage the attention of the Council at an early date if any action is to be taken with respect to it. The firing was carried on under the supervision of Captain Gordon, who was on the range during the whole of the two first days; and Mr Creagh, who aoted as secretary, afforded our representative every assistance in procuring the scores at the earliest moment.
