The Salvationists at Hobart have done something practical. They have purchased for L 1,150 premises which they intend to convert into a home for fallen women. The * North Otago Times' says :—" However promising to the farmer the season may have commenced, the weather experienced lately has had a decidedly depressing influence. The wheat crop has been growing apace under the . influence of < the moist weather, but the oat crjpp in many places has ceased to grow at all, and is stunted in growth. Such weather as we have had has brought the wheat crop along at so rapid a rate, bo far as growth is concerned, that Wednesday night's rainfall laid parts of it where it waß most luxuriant. This, however, may be partly remedied by wafrm weather. It is evident that the promises: of a good harvest are not so satisfactory ias they were earlier in the season, but a brighter aspect may be given to present appearances by a spell of fine weather."
