AN AUCKLAND SHOOTING CASE.

William Henry Jones, manager of the Onehunga Ironsand Works, fired at and wounded John M'Dermott with a revolver, the bullet; gassing into tie body at the middle of the ack and coming out at the armpit. Jones is an American. He was arrested by Detective Walker. It seems that Jones and M'Dermott had a quarrel over cards in a public-house. After the quarrel Jones went home and got the revolver, firing at M'Dermott as he rode past on horseback. AUCKLAND, December 22.

M'Dermott, who was shot by Jones, manager of the Onehunga Ironsand Works, in consequence of a quarrel arising out of a fame of cards, is in a very Critical condition. >r Scott, who attended the patient immediately after the shooting, says there ate two wounds, but one is not serious. The bullet passed through the left thigh from side to side and through the flesh, but did not touch the bone, and the bullet did not remain lodged. The other bullet entered near the centre of the back, a little to the left side of the backbone, and came out under the left armpit. It appears to have entered the cavity of the chest, and does not appear to have injured the lung. The symptoms are such as to make the case serious, and the doctor is doubtful as to recovery, but the wound is not absolutely fatal. William Henry Jones, who is now in, custody on the charge, has been in the Colony from twelve to eighteen months. He was engaged in America to take the management of smelting works to convert ironsand of the West Coast into iron by a company formed for that purpose. He is a man of about forty years of age, medium height and build, an Englishman oy birth, and a native of one of the Midland Counties, but he has spent the greater portion of the prime of his life in the United States. Since arrival in New Zealand he married a daughter of Mr Blakey, J.P., of Onehunga. He was generally liked, although occasionally of quick temper. Is is thought he must have been grossly inßulted and provoked. M'Dermott is a young man thirty years of age, a native of Onehunga, and a, son of a pensioner. He is a laborer, and resides with his parents on the outskirts of Onehunga. He seems to have had the best of the first quarrel with Jones.
