Tho Auckland Trade and Labor Council reportln all tranches of labor and trade there appears to have been a degree of dullness unusual at this season of the year; consequently there has been no scarcity of men. Carpenters: This trade has been overstocked. Wages, 10s per diem of eight hours ; overtime is generally allowed at the rate of time and a-quarter, but there is no recognised trade rule on that point. Boot and Shoemakers: Trade is rather quiet. Wages, 7s 9d per pay of eight hours. Mechanical Engineers : Work has been slack. In this trade overtime is allowed at the rate of time and a-quarter, time and a-half, and double time, as circumstances demand. A few extra hands were required at the railway shops, but more applied than were required. Wage i, 6s to 11s per day of nine hours. Bricklayers; Rato of wages, 12s per day of eight hours. As there will lie a largo amount of building during the present summer and autumn, the demand for this class of labor is expected to increase. Bricklayers’ laborers: Wages, 10s per day; hours same as bricklayers. Cabinetmakers ; Wages, 8s 4d per day of eight hours Blacksmiths arc in fair demand at from 10s to 12s per day. Boilermakers and iron shipbuilders (both these trades being incorporated in this Colony) have been in demand. Wages, 10s to 12s. Moulders: There is a demand for good men at 10s to 12s per day. Printers: There are about 100 men employed, and only one or two out of work. “Stab” wages range from *L2 10s to L 3 per week, working nine hours a-day. Piece hands get Is per thousand, without “ fat." Shipwrights: There is a fair amount of work doing. Wages, 10s per day of eight hours. Tailors, for whom there is little demand at present, receive 10d per hour. There are a great number of young women employed in this business. At the railway workshops wages range from 7s Ud to 12s per day of eight hours. Bakers : No demand for labor. Hours unlimited ; wages, from 7s (id to 8s lOd per day. Laborers; There is an unsatislied demand for agricultural laborers, and as a quantity of railway and other work requiring pick and shovel men will shortly bo commenced tho demand for ordinary laborers and navvies may soon be expected k increase. Tho sawmills in the city are employing about 600 hands, and are busy. Wages range from 7s 6d to 10s per day, and no loss of time. Plasterers are busy. Wages, 10s and 12s per day of eight hours. Painters: This is a trade which has always been well supplied, and there appears no further demand. Wages, 8s 4d per day of eight hours.
