FIRES AT AUCKLAND.

A serious fire occurred in Upper Symonds street at an early hour this morning. Eight houses were destroyed beforo the fire was arrested, as the block was built on a level only a little distance below the Kyber Pass reservoir, and a good pressure of water could not be obtained. The fire began at Fotheringham, eaddler's ; also caught the premises of Ryan, hairdresser; YouDg, plumber; Holloway, chemist; Deny, bootmaker; Halliday, fruiterer; and the dwellings of Messrs De Jongh, Harris, Cavanagh, and Mrs Plumridge. The total damage exceeds L 5.000. The insurances are :—South British, L 1,200 (loss LI.OOO, part reinsurer]); Victoria, L 700; Imperial, L 60 0; New Zealand, L 312 (loss L 200); North British, L2OO ; Norwich Union, L2OO (loss L 50); Standard, L 15 0; Phoenix, LIOO. The house of Mr Luke East, at Tamaki, was burned down yesterday. Insurance, L2OO in the National office.
