The Amount of revenue collected At the Customnnase on (roods cleared to-day for consumption war L 1,378 4s sd. L J Mr John Holmes, of Christchurch, has purchased from the Otago and Southland Investment Company the Waihorunga Estate, near Waimate, containing 18,103 acres freehold and 748 acres educational reserve leased for fourteen years from May, 1879, for LlO7 13s per annum, for L 82,600. Seven thousand five hundred acres are under cultivation, and there is a manager’s house, men’s quarters, and complete scouring plant. L 5,000 was cash, the remainder on terms, LOO,OOO remaining on mortgage for three or five years at 7 per cent. ... The arrival of the Hugh Ewing from Queensland is a noteworthy event, inasmuch as she brings, we believe, the first shipment of Queensland-grown sugar direct to Otago. The Hugh Ewing loaded at the two ports of Townsville and Mackay, and brings in all 302 tons sugar consigned to Neill and Co. (Limited). The ship has unfortunately made a long passage, and the condition and assortment of her sugar will be looked for by the trade with interest.
