EDUCATIONAL RETURNS.
The attendance returns for the quarter ended March 31, which have just been compiled by the Education Board, show that there were 157 schools open during the quarter, employing 236 male and 196 female teachers, besides 13 teachers of sewing. The number of children on the school rolls at the beginning of the quarter was 18,216, and at the end of the quarter 20,380, consisting of 10,374 boys and 10,006 girls, The average attendance for the quarter was 8,510 Iwys and 8,067 girls, making a total of 16,577, being an increase of 210 over the corresponding quarter of last year. The average attendance at the town and suburban schools was :—Arthur street, 745; Normal, 742; Albany street, 684; Union street, 681; George street, 681; Willjam street, 577; Caversham, 622; Forbury, 510 ; Mornington, 440; Kaikorai, 326; Northeast Valley, 295; Kensington, 298. The attendance at the Oamaru schools was : District High School, 305; North School, 359; South School, 392.
