The following messages have appeared in the Melbourne papers! — A banquet was given by the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce in honor of the Victoria and New South Wales Commissioners to the International Wine Exhibition, The President of the Bordeaux Commission, in proposing the heaPh of the colonial representatives, congratulated the colonies on the creditable display made, and expressed surprise at the strength and yield of the Australian wines. Included in the list of toasts proposed was that of the ‘Argus,’ as the advocate of Frectrade in Victoria. Baron Do Lessops has purchased the Panama railway, and it is now understood that the canal across the Isthmus will bo completed by the original date. A largo and influential meeting, professedly neutral in its character, was held in London on the 29th June, to consider the policy of the Government in relation to Egypt, and the present aspect of affairs iu that country. The principal speakers were Kir .Stafford Northcoto, the Marquis of Salisbury, and Mr Pou. crie. The policy of the Government was condemned, and it was strongly urged that the interests of the Einpi-e shoulu be maintained and upheld. A body of marines, artillery, and light infantry, numbering 6,200, has been despatched to Alexandria in the troopship Orontes, to await contingencies; but they will only bo disembarked in the event of a necessity arising for such a step. At a dinner of the Cobden Club the Earls of Derby and Kimberley compared the colonies of New South Wales and Victoria, Earl Derby saying that the world would judge of their ultimate success by their relative progress. Mr Murray Smith, Agent-General for Victoria, who was well received, attacked the policy of Protection, The Repression of Crime in Ireland Bill has passed through Committee in the House of Commons, excepting the new amendments, after a sitting occupying thirty-two hours, during which sixteen of the Irish members, including Mr Parnell, who persistently obstructed progress, were suspended under the Standing Orders from taking part in the debate. This occurred in the morning, and eight other offenders were suspended at night, and likewise ordered to withdraw. At one time it seemed likely that the sitting would be protracted until Sunday morning. Several scenes took place owing to the obstinate attitude of the Homo Rulers, and it was not until twenty-two of them had been excluded that any progress was made and the long sitting terminated. On Wednesday last Sir Henry Parkes and bis daughter attended a grand banquet given at Buckingham Palace, On the following day Sir Henry saw the Lords of the Admiralty respecting the recent transfer of H.M.S. Wolverine to the Government of New South Wales, and also in reference to other matters connected with the Naval Department at Sydney and the defences of the Colony. He subsequently received a public address from the residents ©f Stoneleigh, in Warwickshire, Sir Henry’s native place, when he made a brief speech in reply. On Friday Sir Henry had an interview with Miss Florence Nightingale in reference to hospital matters, and afterwards saw Lord Derby. Sir Henry and Miss Parkes then proceeded by train to Plymouth, where Sir Henry was presented with an address by the Corporation of that town. The members of the Corporation accompanied Sir Henry and his daughter on board the steamer John Elder, and bade them farewell. The John Elder sailed the same afternoon for Australia.
