In the House of Commons to-day Lord John Manners, on behalf ot the Conservative party, gave notice of motion declaring that the Bill to bs introduced by Mr Labouchere to enable Mr Bradlaugh to take the oath would only produce further confusion, without arriving at a settlement of the question.

The ordinary half-yearly meeting of the shareholders of the Bank of New South Wales was held here to-day to receive the report of the directors for the half-year endtd 31st March. The balance-sheet showed that the profits for the half-year amounted to L 93,066, to which has to be added the balance oarried forward from the previous half-jear of L 2,523, giviDgatotal available for division of L 95.589. The following appropriations were recommended: —The payment of a dividend at the rate of 15 per cent, per annum, L 75,000 ; bonus at the rate of 2£ per oent. per annum, L 12.500; carried to reserve fund, L 5.000; leaving a balance to be carried forward of L 3,089. The report was unanimously adopted by the meeting. THE DETAINED STEAMER FERRET. MELBOURNE, April 29. The owner of the steamer India alias Ferret has been arrested. ArRiL 30. It is announced that Mr Berry has arranged to delay the departure of the Suez mail steamer next week by twenty-four hours, in consequence of the mishap to the Tararua, so that the New Zer land rcail may, if possible, arrive in time to be sent on. ATTEMPTED BANK ROBBERY. MELBOURNE, April 30. An attempt was made last night to break into the Bank of Victoria at Seymour, in the North-Eastern District. A little girl, aged one year and a half, daughter o£ Mr Raid, rabbiter, was run over by the train at Dipton this evening and killed. When performing at the Theatre Royal this evening Zela, a gymnast formerly with Chiarini's circus, fell from a ring trapeze, a distanoe of fifteen feet, landing on tho seats in the pit. She was severely shaken, but was able to appear on the stage, after which she was taken to her lodgings. She was out of practice, and had been advised not to appear. WELLINGTON, April 29. i

William Hearn has reoeived a communication from Albert White, of Mercury Bay, agreeing to ecull him for LIOO a-side and the ohampionship. White propoEes that the race be rowed at Wellington, over a three miles and a-haif course, at 10 a.m. on Monday, 25th July; and that the firet deposit be made at Auckland on 16th May. Hearn suggests that the race be rowed within six weeks, and that it take plaoe on a Saturday afternoon instead of Monday; but he will agree to White's terms if the latter insists, AUCKLAND, April 29. A man named Spendon was brought from Tauranga showing signs of paralysis, and in an insensible state. He was working in the hold of tho f.B. Wellington at Tauranga, when a mail-bag pitched on board from the wharf struck him on the back of the neck, knocking him down. He has since recovered coneoiousnm at the Hospital, and is in a fair way to recovery. April 30. The City Counoil office was broken into, and L3O stolen from a safe. Mr resolution before the Grammar Sahoel Board to rescind the adverse resolutions by the Board at a former meeting re the head master were rtjected, Mr Hesketh only voting for them. NAPIER, April 29.

Mr Ormond has jußt returned irom the Bush Settlement, whore ho has teen inquiring into the condition of the settlers. He finds them in great distress. Even where the railway penetrates the settlers cannot get their timber to market owing to the scarcity of trucks, while freight rates are so high that they absorb nearly all the profit, leaving only the lowest subsistence to the vendors.

NELSON, April 30. A lad named Farzelow, residing at Rai zip, received a kick from a hone, and has died after forty-eight hour*' tevere suffering. CHRISTCHURCH, April 30. The newß of the drowning of the passengers per the Tararua caused a profound sensation here. Several highly respected oltizenß were on board, some being en route to England. Early this morning a grocer's shop and house belonging to Mr A. J. Hulme, was partially destroyed by fire. Mrs Hulme and children escaped in their n'ght-dressea. The furniture and stock were partially destroyed and the building gutted. The total loss is about LI, 100. The insurances are : Victoria, L 400; Standard, L 300: South British, L 600; Transatlantic, L2OO. The origin of the fire is unknown. INVERCARGILL, April 30. The body of the child run over by an engine on the Northern line last night was literally cut in two. P*lioe have been despatched to the Bcene of the Tararua's wreck.
