Australian trade, made atrial of her engines on September 25. The Norfolk is what is termed a tlucedock ship, differing from the ordinary spar-deck vessel. She is constructed on the girder principle, and of enormous strength, having floors of considerable depth and thlckuoss. Her masts are of iron in one length, with yards of steel. Her cabins give accommodation for about 500 passengers, in addition to which there is room for about 2,000 tons of cargo and 1,300 tons of coal. She is commanded by Captain J. Pyne O'Callaghan. Her ijmcnBions are as follows :-Length (extreme), ->4Mt,, breadth, 40ft lln ; depth of hold from main deck, .SOl 9ln ; height between decks, 7ft 9in ; tonnage, 3,000 register. Her engines have been fitted by Messrs Humphreys, Tot.nant, and Co., of Deplford, of the four-cylinder compound principle, of fioo hor-c-powor nominal, capable of working up to 3,000 horse-power. Two of the cylinders are 3in bore, and two (bin boro, With 4ft 3in stroke. Tho result of her trial was very •atlsfactory, averaging over fifteen miles nor hour under 701b pressure, ami making 62 revolutions por minute.
