Mr C. Moore, chemist, died very suddenly here last night at ten o'clock. Not feeling well about five o'clock, he took a soothing draught, probably chloral, after which he sank into a state of coma. He was in excellent spirits during the day, and had been preparing to open a debate that evening at the Debating Club, of which be was an enthusiastic member. Ho was highly respected, and a universal favorite both professionally and privately. He leaves a wife, but no children.

INVERCARGILL, December 3.

Mr Print z, of the Long wood, has decided upon procuring from the Thames a battery of ten head of stampers and a steam-engine ".apable of driving twenty head or more. At a meeting of the committee of the Native Industries Association last night, the following resolution was passed:—"That this committee is of opinion that while sympathising stroDgly with the proposed movement, that in the present depressed state of the Colony, and uncertainty at this moment what the Government intentions are as to the encouragement of local industries, the time has not yet arrived for taking any definite action in the matter, but should the Government feel disposed to largely subsidise proposals of this nature, they would be most happy, in conjunction with other Industrial Associations, to further discuss the matter, in order that the same may be brought to a successful issue."

The first contract for a street tramway in Christchurch has been let, extending from the Railway station to the Depot along Colombo street. Mr John Barrett is the contractor and the work is to be finished on loth January. WELLINGTON, December 3.
