A good deal of delay took place at the post in consequence of the anxiety of the jockeys to get away in front, Albyn being most conspicuous. Eventually Mr Peyton got them off on pretty equal terms, Kinsman being quickest on his legs, followed by Albyn ; but ere they had gone fifty yards Colima took up the running and brought them along at a slashing pace, Albyn lying next, with Melita third, followed by Kinsman. Colima continued to force the pace as they rounded the turn into the straight, and passing the stand she sti’l had a clear lead, Albyn being at tho head oi the main body, Melita third, and then came Kinsman, followed by Swiveller and Secundus, lying side by side; Sweetmeat also well up. As they rounded the turn out of the straight Colima still further increased her lead, and placed a gap of quite half-a-dozen lengths between herself and Melita, who was just in front of Albyn, Kinsman, and Sweetmeat, the last-named being closely attended by tho two favorites, Hales already being hard upon Secundus. Colima maintained her advantage along the back stretch, and amidst cries of “ Will they ever catch her ?” she shot past the six furlongs post six or seven lengths in front of Melita; but before they had gone another furlong the gap was decreased, and Melita dropping back, Swiveller took her place, Secundus and Sweetmeat also drawing up. Towards the post half a mile from home the three top weights were on close terms with Colima, who began to compound, and before reaching the end of the rails she was beaten tho issue being left to Sweetmeat, Secundus, and Swiveller, between whom a magnificent struggle ensued, the three being almost level until within fifty yards of the post, when Swiveller swerved from distress, and colliding with Secundus, Sweetmeat gained ah alvaotage, which lie maintained to the end, and, amid great excitement, he won by a short half length, Secundus beating Swiveller a head for second honors. The Dean was a bad fourth, Colima fifth, Lord Burghley sixth, Kinsman seventh, Brilliant eighth, Melita ninth, Drum Major tenth, Albyn eleventh, and Allurement last. Time, 3min. 4Usec. Town Plate, a handicap sweepstakes of 5 sovs each for starters, with 200 sovs added ; second horse to rcccivo 20 sovs out oi the stakes.
