A special meeting of the Otago District, presided over by G.M. H. S. Fish, was held at Carroll's-Hotel,-George- street, last evening, [t was called for the consideration of a new code embodying the alterations made necessary by the passing of the Friendly Societies Acts, and also a new scale of contributions equitably graduated for future members. The interest taken in these questions was attested by the fact that nineteen out of a total of twenty-three lodges were represented. Good' progress was made, merely verbal alterations being made in the rules as drafted, with the exception of rule 40. On this rule,- which regulates the future contributions of incoming members, a keen, discussion toek place, the final result being that a modification of the proposed scale was adopted. In the future new members will be charged'the same initiation fees as at present, but instead of a weekly contribution of 6d to the Sick and Funeral Fund, will have to pay according to the following graduated scale of monthly payments : member's aoe. • s. D. 18 to 20 .."" ..' ;. 2 0 20 to 25 2 4 25 to 30 .. ■ ■ .-. .. 2 8 30 to $5 .. .. .. 3 3 35 to 40 .. .. .. 3 9 40 to 45 .. .. ..4 0 Though this scale does not quite satisfy the strongest refoimers in the society, it has been acquiesced in by them as an instalment, and is considered to bo a great advance on the previous practice. At 1.30 a.m. the meeting adjourned to Wednesday fortnight, when the consideration of the remainder of the rules will be gone on with.
