The cup match Carisbrook v. Dunedin was brought to a very sudden and unexpected conclusion on Saturday. When A. Cargill retired, after adding eight to his previous score, a collapse set in, none of the remaining batsmen being able to make a stand against the bowling of Glen and Paramor, which was excellent. Austin has to thank R. Morrison for his six, because his first hit he put into tthe latter’s hand at short-leg, but it was sadly mulled, and the field, disgusted with himself, returned the ball so Tvildly that two runs resulted from the overthrow. The feature of Saturday’s play was unquestionably the fielding of 0. Haskell. His catches off M‘Neil and Niven were splendidly taken, and the way in which he threw out Fulton is entitled to the highest commendation. Indeed, we may say, without the fear ot contradiction, that a smarter field than he there is not iu the district. His return is unerring and quick, and worthy of imitation. In Carisbrook’s second innings Glen got four wickets for 27 runs, and Paramor five for 46. On the Oval the second eleven of Dunedin met the Otago, and beat them by 7 runs and seven wickets, the respective scores being 83 and 94. For the Otago, Andrews played a good not-out innings of 38 ; and Douglas made 27 with a couple of chances, and was fairly run out when he was 12. The principal scorers for Dunedin were R. Brown, 50 (not out), and J. M. Glasgow 36 (not out), by free hitting. Other matches: Albion 34, Union 60; Excelsior 1 9 and 41 for four wickets, Caledonian 37 and 37 (in this match a new player named Stafford proved effective as a bowler) ; Married ‘Daily Times’ 48 and 4 (with ten wickets to spare), Single 18 and 33 ; Marshal] and Copeland 121, Opoho 57 ; Watchmakers and Jewellers 51, Dunedin Boot Factory 27; National 64, Excelsior 54; Ziogari 52 and 55, Maori Hill 53 and 48.
