With the acceleration of speed which has been gomg oh at Home of late years, and with the increase in the size and weight of the carriages and engines used, there is now a need for much heavier rails, and there is another change in their form. The doubleheaded sections are not so generally regarded with favor as they were, and what are known as “bull-headed” are in some instances preferred, while Bessemer steel is almost invariably the material from which they are formed. The increase in weight has also gone on, until it is stated that the Midland Railway have determined to adopt a weight of 851b to the yard, or considerably more than double that used forty years ago.
