RAILWAY MANAGEMENT.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—This subject is one so large that perhaps at first sight you maybe indisposed to afford space for my communication; but I intend to limit my observations to a single point affeoting inhabitants of and visitors to Dunedin. With this preface, I venture to suggest, with all due respect to commissioners and managers, wherever they may be and whoever they may be, that a most unsuitable time has been chosen to renovate the railway station at Dunedin. For many months past it has been in the shabbiest condition; but the day before New Year'B Day, when a very large number of passengers wou d be gathered on the platform, was the chosen and appointed time for repainting the station. With the pressure of a large crowd and the thoughtless action of individuals agre«t deal of paint must come off upon the New Year's dresses of women, ohildren, aad;men. Is it possible that the local railway magnates are in collusion—perhaps I should say accord—with shopkeepers supplying those articles ? Whether it be so or not the pleasure seekers will scarcely thank the managers for their troubie. The thrifty housewife will be especially severe upon them. Gould no other time have been chosen for the cleaning and beautifying process? Instead of whitening the sepulchre, would it not have been better to renovate the carriages, many of which are extremely dirty and greasy, and with broken sash-glasses, unshutable doors, and hundreds of nails protrudiLg from the panels of the carriage*, giving an idea of insecurity and of causing injury to anything rubbed against them? The paint will, indeed, skin over in a few hours, but it will not be hard, and the "skin" will rub off on the slighte.t pressure. However, it may be partly the vanity of a few men. I cannot help remarking that if my observations are correct, we have too much tail and too little head in railway management—perhaps, too much personal temper.—l am, &e., _ , Observes.
