The s.s. Hawea left the Port this afternoon with cargo and passengers for the North. ARRIVAL OF THE NORVAL. This vessel, which we reported in our last issue as having arrived at the Heads, was towed up to the anchorage off Deborah Bay at 11 p m.,»but was not cleared until this morning. The Norval is not altogether a stranger to this port, her last visit being some two years since, under the command of Captain Young, who lias been shifted to the company’s ship Eurydice, and is succeeded by Captain Hailiday, whose first visit it is to New Zealand, The Norval brings forty-eight passengers and 2,500 tons of cargo, 1,200 tons of which are dead weight; also a valuable Clydesdale entire, called Kilbowie, bred by Mr D. Riddell, of Blackball, Paisley, which has arrived in fine condition. A second horse of the same breed, valued at LI ,250, unfortunately died from inflammation on the 13th November. Their owner is Mr Bimie, agentleraan well known in the Province of Canterbury. The ship has made the passage from London in ninety days, and from the Scilly Island in 82 days. Captain Hailiday reports leaving London Docks on October 4, and after encountering a continuance of strong S.W. gales, took his departure from Scilly on the 12th; variable and squally weather prevailed till she took the N.E. trade, in latitude 22deg. lomin. N., on October 21; the trade gave out on the 29th, in' latitude lldeg. 89min. N.; the S.E. trade was picked up on November 5, in latitude 2deg. 49min. N. ; crossed the Equator two days later, in longitude 29deg. 30npn. W., and carried the trade as far as latitude 18deg. S.; thence she hart a day or two of baffling easterly winds; took up the westerlies on November 15, crossed the meridian of Greenwich on November 20 in latitude SSdeg. S., and that of the Cape of Good Hope on December 1 in latitude 40deg. 29min. S. ; experienced strong gales from N.N.W. to S.S.W. across the Southern Ocean, passed Tasmania on December 27, carried favorable winds up to the land and arrival oS the Snares at 8 a.m. on the 31st, breasted Otago Heads at 4 a.m. on the Ist inat, was drifted to the northward, worked back and took Pilot Kelly on' board at 3 p.m. on the 2nd inst. The passengers presented Captain Hailiday with a written testimonial expressive of their satisfaction at the kindness and courtesy shown by him to them during tho voyage. ■

Wellington, January 1. —The Pleiades, from London, brings about thirty passengers, but no Government immigrants. No deaths, sickness, or accidents occurred during tho voyage. During the passage the Pleiades spoke the barque Clara, hound from Havannah to Malmora. She reported having lost her captain and five men from yellow fever a week leaving port. The Douglas was also spoken, and wished to be reported all well. She was bound from Liverpool to Melbourne. Sailed ; Ladybird, for tho South. Pasengers: Mrs Nichols, Messrs Parsons and Champion. January 3.—The steamer City of New York, with the outward ’Frisco mail, cleared Sydney Heads at 4 p. m. on Thursddy for Auckland. ‘ Lyttelton, January 2.—Arrived: Charles Decring, barque, from New York, with reapers and binders, and notions, half for Dunedin. Brigantine Isabella, from Catlin’s River. American brigantine Star, from Newcastle. On the voyage a seaman named Walker was knocked overboard by the main boom and was drowned.
