THE VOLUNTEERS.

The Dismounting Competition between the Dunedin and Ohristclrarch batteries, which it was found impossible to go through at the Forbury Park on Saturday last, took place this morning at the High School Grounds. The conditions were as follow:—The detainments to be formed up at the order of march. At the word "Action," rear to come into action, fire three rounds, dismount the battery, change both wheels, rear limber up, detachments rear stand at ease. There being some misunderstanding as to the order in which the movements were to be executed, and there being some difference in the drul, each detachment having practised differently, it was deoided rather than have no competition that each should do it in its own way. Captain Cuthbertson. of Invercanrill, was appointed umpire, and the time was taken from the word "Action rear "until the command " Stand at ease " was given. The visitors were victorious, finishing in three minutes exactly. The time of the others was not taken, as they did not finish. They were unfortunate in smashing their handspike, and lost Bome time in consequence, having to ÜBe the sponge staff instead. The visiting detachment are no novices, and have evidently been well drilled; and it is to be hoped that on the next occasion the movements and drill will be precisely similar in all respeots. The most intereiting and exoiting rifle match that has been fired in Ducedin for years came off this morning at Anderson's Bay butts at 6 o'clock befcwten a team of eight from the following companies :—Dunedin City Guards, Christchurch City Guards, Christehureh Engineers, Biverton Rifles, Invercargill Rifles, and tho Arrow and Queenstown Rifles. The morning was very favorable for good Bhoeting until arriving at the 500 yds range, when the wind came very puffy and shifty from the rear. As will be seen from the scores below the Riverton Rifles have headed the l'st, with the Dunedin City Guards olosa on their heels.
