CANTERBURY AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL SHOW.

[From Our Oww Correspondent.]

Christchurcii, November B.—The Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association Show was opened to - day by the Governor a little before noon, but the atten dance of the public was small owing to the day being devoted to the judging of exhibits and making awards. Affairs seem to be well arranged, a large number of judges being appointed to decide on the merits of the .1,023 exhibits ; but I am unable to send any prize-libt as only a few awards are as yet been made, and none are posted up. The managers have absurdly bound down the local Pre 33 not to publish the prize list until Monday morning, urging as a reason for such an extraordinary course that, if in to-morrow's papers, people ■would not go to the show, as they would see -who had gained the prizes. The representatives of the two Dunedin morning papers allowed themselves to be similarly bound #lown, and the only information I could obtain was that the exhibits all round ane very good, cattle and sheep especially so. John Ferguson exhibited the best bnllock in the show among his numerous entries, and for it obtained first prize for bullock 1 of any age. Two of this gentleman's and one of S. Garforth's are fit to compete in any bhow in England. The latter obtained the first prize for a red poley Devon ] •cow as an extra exhibit. The sheep are magnificently represented, but Gillies and Street's usually good exhibits much missed ; those gentlemen not showing this Rommey Marsh breed were net very numerous; but the Leicesters, Merinos, and. Coferwolds were excellent. _ The Down class •was very good, but limited in number. Chbistchtjrch, November 9.—The second day of the show is a great success, upwards .of 15,000 people visiting the ground. Of all ithe exhibits the thoroughbred sires attracted the most attention. G. Stead's recent importation Lcolinns gained first prize, handsome Papapa second. Stead's English brood .mares Miss Laura and Petroleuse took first and second prizes in their class ; and in sheep the Hon. R. Campbell took first prizes for merinoes; P. C. Threlkeld in Leicesters; 17. Z. and A.L. Company in border Leifesters ; M. Holmes and F. Sutton coming BfcXt; J. F. Ford and Co. in Cotswolds; Henderson and M'Beath in fat sheep. In cattle John Deans was principal prizetaker 'in shorthorns; John Fergusson in fat cattle. The draught horses were very good. William Boag took several prizes in implements. P. and D. Duncan took eleven prizes for ploughs, grubbers, harrows, clod-crushers, etc.; G. Booth, for corndrill; R. Wilkin and Co., for chaff-cutter and reaping machine.
