SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

OAMARU RACES. [By Telegraph,] (From our own Correspondent.) The most successful race gathering yet held in Oamaru, both as regards attendance and the quality of the horses engaged, took place to-day. The weather was beautifully fine, and the attendance, which numbered 1,000 persons when the bell rang for the first race, swelled during the day to fully 6,000. The course is situated about three miles outside the town boundary, and the cabmen reaped a harvest. Proceedings opened with the Maiden Plate, for which flirt, who ran gamely at Geraldine, was made a hot favorite. A slashing race ensued between her and Mis* take, resulting in favor of the latter. The Selling Race fell to Miss Elswick, after the semblance of a race with Jack the Flat. Fer the big handicap Ariel was the most fancied, only level money being obtainable about him. Bide-a-Wee was also inquired for, while there was considerable speculation as to how Fishhook would shape after his twelve months’ enforced absence from public performances. The following are the results : Maiden Puts, of 40 sots. One mile and a-quarter. Mr Mitchell’s oh g Mistake, 9st 21bs (Gravel) 1 Mr Gray’s b m Flirt, Bit 21bs ... The other, two entered the straight together, but Gray had to use his whip to Flirt, and though she answered gamely, she was not able to shake off Mistake, Time, 2min, 26secs. The field were despatched to a good start. Passing the stand Maritana led, Bine Peter and Bide-a-Wee next, Ariel and Fishhook last, hard held. At the back of the course Fishhook passed his horses one after another and led into the straight, with Blue Peter and Ariel close on him. The whips were applied to all three, and Ariel won a desperate race on the post by a short head. Blue Peter ran a game horse, though when the pace was forced at the finish he was outpaced. Unknown was fourth, Maritana fifth, and Bide-a Wee absolute last. Time, 3min. 18sec. Had Fishhook been fit and well there is little doubt the race would have been at his mercy, for while he was much too big Ariel looked the picture of health.
