Explanatory Note.— Suffice it to say that the great evil of the ordinary system practised by other Importers, which makes everything so dear in the Colonies, is that every hundred pounds worth passes through at least as many as five tradesmen’s hands before it comes to them, each one having a commission of from 2| to 10 per cent., which makes an aggregate advance on the cost of from 20 to 30 per cent., which, unfortunately, the consumer has to pay for.
