Original Poetry.

We have been requested to publish the following lines, suggested after reading the “Battle of Dorking,” and respectfully dedicated to Mr George Smith, Park House, by the author, John Barr (Craigielee) : War ! to the knife for Liberty, For England, home, and hearth ; Death to the foe who dare to plant Ilia foot on British earth. Britania sits upon her rock, Surrounded by the waves, Where thousands of her foemen sleep Within their watery graves. From every glen, from every grove, From every hill and plain, Heroes come forth at her command To guard her salt domain. The ploughboy leaves his crooked plough, The shepherd leaves his hocks, The aged man, with hoary head, The youth with flowing locks ; They come to fight for fatherland, The blest land of' their birth, All! all will tight for Britain’s Queen, The greatest Queen on earth. A wall of fire, unquenchable, Shall round Britania burn ; ’Twill light the foemen to those shores From whence they’ll ne’er return. For death shall hold high festival, And blood for wine shall flow, Hurled from the rocks into the sea, Shall crush thq reeling foe. The rampant lion, Scotia’s pride, With England’s blooming rose, The shamrock of old Ireland, In Erin’s isle that grows Shall o’er Britania’s ramparts wave, Ihe emblem of her might ; So, may God bless Victoria, And Heaven defend the right. War to the knife for Liberty, For England, home, and hearth ; Death to the foe who dares to plant His foot on British earth.
