NEW YEAR'S DAY .

THE CALEDONIAN GATHERING. Twelve months since we had the unpleasant task of inserting an announcement in our columns, that '' in consequence of the inclemency of the weather the second day's programme of the Caledonian Sports will be postponed until Saturday next." We have a vivid recollection of the miserable sloppy state the ground was in, and heartily congratulate the Society upon the good foi'tune which has attended their Fourth Annual Gathering. Although the wind was rather high yesterday morning, it was not sufficiently troublesome to produce any great inconvenience, and we were, therefore, not surprised to find that nearly 5000 men, women, and children, had assembled to witness the carrying out of one of the best programmes the Society has issued since its formation. During the past three months the Directors, assisted by their indefatigable and zealous Secretary (Mr. John It. Thompson) have been constantly at' work, to promote a successful issue to the Gathering ; and we think it will be admitted on all sides that they have succeeded. The advantages which will accrue through the possession of a permanent site and Stand are so palpable, that we need not dilate upon them ; and there can be no doubt that the funds will now be so mixclx relieved of the presence of extraordinary expenses, that the original objects for which the Society was formed will in future stand a chance of being legitimately carried out. The public are well acquainted with the construction of the new Grand Stand, and we only refer to it to remark that it is essentially commodious and comfortable, and -when completed will be one of the most ornamental structures of the kind in the colonies. Subjoined is a list of the whole of the games which took place yesterday, and also those of to-day which we -were enabled to obtain partictdars of in time for this evening's issue. . From noon to-day crowds of people were making for the grounds, and although the assemblage is not likely to reach to the same numbers as visited them yesterday, there will probably be about three thousand present. We were very glad to see that the • extortionate raising of the fares by the cabdrivers met with its proper reward, in the refusal of hundreds to patronize them. The utmost good humor prevailed during the whole of the day, if we except the riotous conduct of a couple of individuals, who were promptly removed by the Directors, and who, we observe by our Police Report, have received .a lesson which will probably have a salutary - effect, and teach them that the harmony of the many is not to be marred, with impunity, by '<fcke indecent disturbances of one,or two dis.^racefel« fellows. *\ . . .
